# Role management

> Create, inspect, and safely apply Discord role changes.

Use **Roles** in the server dashboard to search roles by name or ID, in Discord hierarchy order. The list shows each role’s color and whether Discord or an app manages it. Open a role’s details for its hierarchy position, permission bitfield and ID. Review individual permissions in Discord’s Server Settings → Roles. Authorized role administrators can create roles and change editable colors.

Member counts are not loaded automatically. Choose **Load member counts** to
request current counts from Discord. Large servers can take longer; an unavailable
count is shown as unavailable, never as zero. After changing a member's roles,
load the counts again to see the updated totals.

## Change a member's roles

Search for the member by name, mention or Discord ID and select the complete desired role set. Run
diagnostics before applying. Pup checks the actor's and bot's Manage Roles
permission, the actor, bot, and target hierarchy positions, and whether every
changed role still exists and is editable. A managed role cannot be changed.

The preview identifies every role to add or remove. **Apply reviewed change**
is enabled only for a clear preview. Pup reads Discord again and rejects a stale
preview, then sends the complete role set in one Discord update. Adding,
removing, or toggling several roles therefore cannot leave a partly applied set.

Every applied, duplicate, or blocked role-management attempt has a correlated
audit record. A successful API response proves the provider accepted the
change; release and deployment acceptance remain separate evidence.
