# Slowmode and channel locks

> Limit posting or lock a channel, with safe restoration.

Use `/slowmode` to limit message frequency and `/lock` to stop posting in a channel. For a wider incident, use [Server lockdown](https://docs.pup.run/server-lockdown.md).

```text wrap theme={null}
/slowmode seconds:10 channel:#weekend-walks
/lock channel:#weekend-walks reason:Pausing the conversation while staff catch up.
/unlock channel:#weekend-walks
```

You need the channel moderation task and Discord **Manage Channels**. pup needs **Manage Channels** for slowmode and **Manage Roles** for channel permission changes.

For a timed slowmode, add `restore-after:10m`; for a temporary lock, add `duration:10m`. Complete commands execute directly.

Check [Command reference](https://docs.pup.run/commands.md) for the available duration and temporary-action inputs.

## Slowmode

With `^` saved as your prefix, these commands set a ten-second delay:

```text wrap theme={null}
^slowmode 10 Please slow down.
^slowmode 10 #weekend-walks Please slow down.
```

The first applies to the current channel. Mention a channel before the reason to choose another one.

Discord accepts zero (clear slowmode) through six hours. A timed change records the previous duration and the value pup applied. Restoration checks that the current duration still matches pup's change, so it preserves a newer manual change.

## Lock and restore

pup checks the channel and current permissions before changing access. Check the case for the Discord result. Restore through pup's unlock or incident controls; restoration preserves unrelated permission changes. Multi-channel incidents belong on [Server lockdown](https://docs.pup.run/server-lockdown.md).
