The Assistant lets members talk with Pup as part of the server. Pup responds when mentioned, when a member replies to one of its messages, and in any dedicated chat channels you choose. The feature is off until a server administrator enables it under **Community → Assistant**. **Response channels** controls where all replies are allowed, including mentions, replies to Pup and dedicated chat channels. Leave the list empty to allow replies in any channel where Pup can read and send. If you select channels, include each dedicated chat channel too; selecting a parent channel also allows its threads. Pup receives the current message, its reply context, a short window of nearby conversation and up to four attached images. It matches the conversation's language and follows the personality written for the server. When a member replies to someone else's message, Pup also reads a small window from before that message to understand names and pronouns in the conversation. If it cannot identify the person reliably, it asks for a mention or Discord ID. The **Personality** field holds up to 6,000 characters. Pup applies a few tone rules alongside it: it answers what was said before joking, matches the length and energy of the conversation, keeps running jokes to the people involved, and declines requests in its own voice with a short reason instead of a stock refusal. Describe the voice, in-jokes and people you want in the personality; Pup keeps them from taking over every reply. ## Web search, links and research With **Web search** on, Pup can search the web, open public pages and PDFs, including links members share, and run short calculations. Answers that rely on a source mark it inline, such as \[1], and end with a compact **Sources** line. Link previews are suppressed for those answers. For questions that need several searches or careful comparison, Pup switches to research mode. It first posts a short acknowledgement in its own words, keeps typing while it reads and cross-checks sources for up to three minutes, then edits that message into the finished answer. Longer answers may continue in up to two follow-up messages. Pup does not add emoji reactions while it works. Pup only opens ordinary public web addresses. It refuses private, local and internal network addresses, non-standard ports and very large files. ## Questions about the server and Pup Pup can look up the server's description, rules channel, upcoming scheduled events and roles, and find members by name. Its channel list only includes channels that are public or part of the current conversation, and that the member asking can see. Pup also searches the documentation for its own version, so questions such as "how do I set up raid mode?" link to the matching page. Pup can also search its retained server event logs and moderation cases. It can list or count recorded events for a member, such as joins and leaves, and read case outcomes and reasons. Pup checks the asking member's current server access for each search: **Logging view** for event logs, **Moderation view** for ordinary cases and reasons, and **Moderation administer** for restricted staff notes. The server owner keeps their normal verified owner access. Replies appear in the conversation channel, where other members may see them. Event counts describe what Pup recorded, not a complete Discord history. A missing log does not establish that an event never happened. A requested ban does not establish that Discord completed it. This search does not cover support tickets, anonymous submissions or security incidents. ## History search **History search** is off by default. When enabled, Pup can search earlier messages and read other channels, threads and pasted message links, including reading a channel from its very first message. Search only covers messages Pup stored for learning, so channels where learning is off are never searched, and deleted messages are excluded. Pup's answer is visible to everyone in the channel, not only to the member who asked. Pup therefore only shares messages from a channel when the member asking can read it and the channel is either visible to @everyone or part of the current conversation: the current channel, its parent channel, or a public thread in it. Content from other private channels and private threads is never quoted, even to members who can see it. Reading the current conversation does not require History search. ## Reminders and polls With **Reminders and polls** on, members can ask Pup to remind them later. Pup mentions only that member at the due time, replying to the original message when it still exists. Reminders must be at least one minute and at most one year ahead, and each member can have up to 25 scheduled reminders. Members can ask Pup to list or cancel their own reminders. Turning the setting or the Assistant off cancels reminders that come due while it is off. Pup can also create a poll in the current channel for the member who asks. The server's [poll settings](/polls) still apply to that member, including creator roles, allowed channels, durations and limits; if a rule prevents the poll, Pup explains why. Pup never takes moderation actions, though it may suggest them. ## Shared server memory Each server has its own memory. Pup can use a relevant memory in any channel where it answers, while raw nearby conversation stays within its original channel or thread. Discord member and channel IDs preserve attribution when a name changes. Choose how selective memory should be: * **Community** keeps established server decisions, events, responsibilities and terminology, while generally skipping personal details. * **Balanced** also keeps durable interests, preferences and ongoing projects that help future conversations. This is the default. * **Social** allows broader continuity around members and recurring conversations, while still skipping disposable chatter. These choices guide Supermemory's extraction model; they are not guaranteed classification rules and do not change how much eligible source content is submitted. Pup preserves attribution and tells the memory system not to turn jokes, gossip, roleplay or guesses into facts. ## Choose where Pup learns Public-channel learning is on by default. Private and restricted-channel learning is off by default. Each channel can override the server default with **Yes**, **No** or **Inherit**. Ordinary threads inherit their parent channel; private threads use the private default unless explicitly overridden. A channel where learning is off can still use the server's existing shared memory. Its messages, nearby context and Pup's reply are not added to Supermemory. Messages that request a reply are still stored in Pup's database and sent with the reply context to Azure OpenAI. Enabling private-channel learning shows the consequence directly: what Pup learns there can be used anywhere in that server. Changing the setting stops future collection. It does not rebuild or remove existing memory. The **Memory** tab lets an administrator browse, search and filter memories, then exclude one from active recall. The provider may retain related processing history after that action. ## Message storage and deletion Pup stores the text of messages collected for learning or a requested reply, along with author and channel names, Discord identifiers and image attachment URLs. These local records currently have no automatic expiry. Completing a reply or learning a memory does not clear them. Deleting a Discord message marks its local record deleted but does not erase the stored text or attachment URLs, and does not guarantee removal from Supermemory. See [Data and privacy](/privacy#assistant-memory) before enabling learning, especially in private channels. ## Access and limits Assistant settings and memory management use the server's existing configuration permission, including verified server-owner access. Pup ignores bots and webhooks. An ordinary reply is limited to 60 seconds and six tool calls; research mode is limited to three minutes and twenty tool calls. If memory is temporarily unavailable, Pup continues with the current conversation when it can. ## Channel selection and learning overrides Search **Response channels** and **Dedicated chat channels** to add or remove channels. Leave response channels empty to allow mentions and replies anywhere Pup can read and send. Dedicated chat channels also allow responses to ordinary messages. **Channel learning overrides** shows only configured exceptions. Search for a channel, choose **Learn** or **Do not learn**, then save Assistant settings. **Use default** removes that exception. Other channels follow the public or private learning default. Threads inherit their parent channel; private threads use the private default unless explicitly configured. Changing learning stops future collection; it does not erase existing memories.
