# Choose what pup remembers

> Set learning channels and manage shared server memory.

pup's memory belongs to the server. Something learned in an enabled private channel can be recalled in another channel in that server. Choose learning settings with that visibility in mind.

Open **Community → Assistant** to choose learning defaults and overrides. Use its **Memory** tab to browse or exclude stored memories.

## Shared server memory

pup recalls relevant memories before answering and saves new ones after its reply. It keeps track of who said what when a Discord name changes. Nearby conversation context stays within the original channel or thread.

Choose how selective memory should be:

* **Community** keeps established server decisions, events, responsibilities
and terminology, while generally skipping personal details.
* **Balanced** also keeps durable interests, preferences and ongoing projects
that help future conversations. This is the default.
* **Social** allows broader continuity around members and recurring
conversations, while still skipping disposable chatter.

These settings guide what Supermemory keeps from the messages it receives. All eligible source messages are still sent for processing. Review stored memories for mistakes, especially jokes, guesses and roleplay.

## Choose where pup learns

Public-channel learning is on by default. Private and restricted-channel
learning is off by default. Each channel can override the server default with
**Yes**, **No** or **Inherit**. Ordinary threads inherit their parent channel;
private threads use the private default unless explicitly overridden.

A channel where learning is off can still use the server's existing shared
memory. Its messages, nearby context and pup's reply are not added to Supermemory.
Messages that request a reply are still stored in pup's database and sent with
the reply context to Azure OpenAI.
Enabling private-channel learning shows the consequence directly: what pup
learns there can be used anywhere in that server.

Changing the setting stops future collection. It does not rebuild or remove
existing memory. The **Memory** tab lets an administrator browse, search and
filter memories, then exclude one from active recall. The provider may retain
related processing history after that action.

## Message storage and deletion

Review [Data and privacy](https://docs.pup.run/privacy.md#assistant-memory) before enabling learning, especially in private channels. Turning learning off stops future collection; use the Memory tab to exclude an existing memory from recall.

## Channel overrides

**Channel learning overrides** shows configured exceptions. Search for a channel, choose **Learn** or **Do not learn**, then save Assistant settings. **Use default** removes the exception. Ordinary threads inherit their parent; private threads use the private default unless explicitly configured.

See [Data and privacy](https://docs.pup.run/privacy.md#assistant-memory) for processing and deletion. [History search](https://docs.pup.run/assistant.md#history-search) is a separate choice: learning does not automatically let pup quote other channels.
